In the era of only iPods,it was easy to synchronize them with PC’s. You just need to put iPod into a docking cradle and it works. But it is not the case with iPhone. It can work both in horizontal and vertical position. Which way should you dock it? Apple offers a solution to this as well as it has devised a docking station that will be needed to operate it comfortably when charging and synchronizing iPhone with your computer.
Under this new design, iPhone can be docked in any 360 degree orientation. There are two possible implementations of this docking station described Apple patent “Methods and apparatuses for docking a portable electronic device that has a planar like configuration and that operates in multiple orientations”
First (above) is a fixed docking station where the connection interfaces between the dock and the iPhone can be synchronized independently of the direction at which the device is put in the cradle.
Another embodiment has the docking station that includes the base and rotational platform. The iPhone is fixed to the platform in one direction only, however the platform itself can be rotated at 360 degree angle (below).

After crossing over radar, the OpenMoko Neo1973 (linux-powered smartphone) has come out with anti-iphone. The phone weighs 184 grams, and is just a bit thicker and taller than the iPhone. Now who will define its success in an era dominated by iphones. Nothing other than its features! yup. The name Neo1973 is a reference to Dr. Martin Cooper, who made the first mobile phone call in 1973.
The specs:
FIC Neo1973:
* 120.7 x 62 x 18.5 (mm)
* 2.8″ VGA (480×640) TFT Screen
* Samsung s3c2410 SoC @ 266 MHz
* Global Locate AGPS chip
* Ti GPRS (2.5G not EDGE)
* Unpowered USB 1.1
* Touchscreen
* micro-sd slot
* 2.5mm audio jack
* 2 additional buttons
* 1200 mAh battery (charged over USB)
* 128 MB SDRAM
* 64 MB NAND Flash
* Bluetooth (2.0)
Why is the Neo1973 the anti-iPhone? Because it’s totally open source. The idea is to collaborate with developers who will create all the basic apps. The handset is manufactured by FIC (First International Computer, Inc.), who sold about a million phones in China last year. OpenMoko/FIC will then certify a bundle of those apps and mass market them with the phone along with support.
